What is your approach philosophy?

Our practice is dedicated to helping children build independent skills in a culturally sensitive environment. We provide high-quality pediatric occupational therapy services that make therapy enjoyable and meaningful, helping children achieve their goals. We understand that children may face challenges in areas like motor skills, coordination, play, writing, reading, math, self-regulation, attention, social interactions, and executive functioning.

To address these challenges, we design therapy activities tailored to your child’s needs and developmental milestones. We offer therapy and classes in the comfort of your home and community, with sessions conducted in English and/or Chinese. Each session builds on the previous one, using evidence-based approaches combined with interactive games, books, and activities.

Family involvement is key to success, so we create personalized home programs for families to follow between sessions, offering ongoing guidance to support your child’s progress beyond therapy.

What is occupational therapy evaluation?

This comprehensive evaluation process assesses a child’s functional abilities, strengths, and challenges, conducted by a licensed occupational therapist with specialized training in pediatric care. The evaluation covers areas such as fine and gross motor skills, sensory processing, cognition, executive functioning, self-care, and social-emotional development. Each evaluation is personalized to the child’s unique needs, considering their age, developmental level, and any underlying conditions, with valuable input from parents, teachers, and the child. We are mindful of cultural diversity and strive for accurate assessments that respect each family’s values and preferences. Our goal is to create tailored treatment plans that help every child reach their full potential and therapy goals while honoring their cultural background.

根據每位孩童的發展年齡、學習里程碑及醫療診斷,我們提供個別化且全面的兒童職能治療評估。評估內容包括精細動作和粗大動作發展、感覺訊息整合能力、認知學習能力、執行功能、自我照顧能力及社交情緒發展能力。我們結合學校老師的在校觀察和家長的家庭互動,並考量東西方文化的養育差異,為每位孩童制定專屬的治療計畫,以協助他們發揮最佳能力。

What to expect for the initial appointment?

● Intake Interview: gathering cross-cultural information about your family; child’s medical history, developmental milestones, areas of strength and weakness, and any specific concerns you may have; and discussing potential goals for therapy.
● PEO (Person-Environment-Occupation) Evaluation: assessing your child and the expectation of your family, home/school/community environments, and daily activities.
● Motor Evaluation: evaluating upper body posture control and strength, hand grasp and strength, bilateral coordination, hand-eye coordination, ball skills and visual-motor skills, self-care skills.
● Pre-Writing Skills Evaluation: assessing skills such as copying lines/shapes on paper, holding a crayon, and in-hand manipulation skills
● Handwriting Evaluation: evaluating body posture, pencil grasp, letter formation and spacing, line placement, visual perception, sentence copying, and note-taking skills.
● Social-Emotional(self-regulation) Evaluation: observing play and turn-taking skills, functional motor skills, visual attention, transitions and participation in structured fine motor activities, as well as the ability to self-regulate and follow directions.

What is the treatment plan?

During treatment sessions, the focus is on the child’s needs and interests, and the goal is to promote cultural sensitivity to the development of functional motor skills, social-emotional skills, and play skills. Some of the areas of focus during treatment sessions include:

● Developing age-appropriate fine motor skills, such as using scissors, coloring and
   drawing, manipulating small objects, and using fine motor tools
● Facilitating visual-motor integration, such as copying, drawing shapes and letters, and
   writing within a designated space
● Developing functional play skills, including turn-taking, sustaining attention, and
   participation in play, and using hands and body appropriately
● Increasing independence in activity transitions, such as going from home to school
● Building cultural-sensitive daily routines at home, including bedtime, bath time, and
   mealtimes
● Increasing independence in activities and routines at home, such as developing self-care
   skills like dressing, clothing fasteners, personal hygiene, and organization of belongings
● Handwriting instruction with a focus on improving bilingual (English/Chinese)
   handwriting skills, including English letter formation, Chinese character formation, spatial awareness, line placement, and endurance to task. 

在治療的過程裡,我們不僅考量孩童特定的需求和興趣,也同時結合東西文化的需求與敏感度。治療的目標包含促進孩童功能性的動作技巧、社交情緒與互動能力的發展。以下是治療過程中主要的內容:

1. 提升適齡的精細動作技能,包括使用剪刀、上色、操作小物品和使用手部操作工具等活      動。
2. 提升視知覺動作整合能力:複製圖形、繪製形狀與中英文字母與在指定的空間內進行書      寫等工作。
3. 培養社交遊戲能力,包含輪流參與、持續注意力、活動參與和適切的肢體互動能力。
4. 協助建立具有文化敏感度的日常例行活動規律性,例如就寢、洗澡和用餐時間。
5. 促進獨立自理技能,好比自我進食、穿衣、個人衛生和物品整理能力。
6. 提供雙語(英文/中文)文字的書寫能力指導,改善視知覺相關書寫技巧,包括英文字      母的形成、中文書寫的筆順與空間概念、文字書寫整齊度和工作持續度。
